Rancho Peñasquitos
Home of Beautiful Black Mountain
Just south of RB is Rancho Peñasquitos. The name is often shortened to the letter initials “PQ” by San Diego locals. PQ is known as an upper-class neighborhood with residential areas placed on roads hugging natural hills and ridges. The community lays claim to an area of approximately 10,000 acres including Black Mountain Regional Park, with just over half of the land being used for housing. Reaching to over 1,500 feet above the surrounding area, the most distinctive landmark in the community is Black Mountain. The rolling landscape and mesas provide privacy and a sense of peace for the residents of each neighborhood.
Named after the first Spanish Land Grant in the County -- Rancho de Los Peñasquitos, the area is known for its historic value, with Native American Kumeyaay history dating back as far as 7,000 yars ago. In fact, remains of the prehistoric culture can still be found within the area today. Rancho Peñasquitos is roughly bordered by Rancho Bernardo and Black Mountain Ranch to the north, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Poway and Sabre springs to the east, Torrey Highlands and Del Mar Mesa to the west and Mira Mesa and Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve, an open space preserve that offers biking, hiking and horse-trails.
Rancho Peñasquitos is also known for its location. RP locals enjoy ample areas of parkland and open space, providing opportunities to bask in the beautiful San Diego weather. In addition to the residential development, the community includes several town centers for commerce. With easy access to the I-15 Freeway and SR-56, RP is close to many attractions. You will be only about 15 to 20 minutes to a number of San Diego City landmarks such as Downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, Sea World, Del Mar Fairgrounds and the University of California San Diego. Stunning beaches are also easily accessible such as the La Jolla Shores and much more.
The local schools are part of the acclaimed Poway Unified School District. Many of these schools continue to be recognized for high test scores and also receive numerous awards for excellence in education.
The RP community celebrates a number of events throughout the year, three of which are the most notable. Held every first Sunday of May, the Fiesta de los Peñasquitos is a community oriented street faire wherein hundreds of vendors provide arts & crafts, food, and even home improvement tips. The Fourth of July fireworks are also a sight to behold, and are held each year at Westview High School. Finally, the festive and well-recognized holiday light display that is Christmas Card Lane can be experienced by both residents and visitors from December 10 to December 31st of each year.
